About Me

I was born and raised in East Tennessee. After graduation from high school at age 17, I enlisted in the navy. Most of my active duty was aboard the USS Oriskany (CVA-34). I then returned home and attended the University of Tennessee. My corporate career was with DuPont and Conoco. I retired in 2004 to the Texas Hill Country and have been working part-time, pursuing hobbies, examining my life and purpose, and working on becoming a better person, husband, father, and grandfather. My wife and I moved to Charlotte, NC in 2019 to be closer to family. I am very blessed.

Over the Years

I married Cassie Wilson before I graduated from college. Our son, Richard, was born in 1973 in Greenville, NC where I was working for DuPont. We were divorced a few years later, primarily because of my selfishness and misguided career priorities.

DeLana and I were married in Cleveland, OH in 1980. She had two children from her previous marriage – Jearldean (1969) and Thomas (1972) Majors. Their father had primary custody, so we were part-time parents to the three kids. I was transferred often in those days, so all three spent time with us in Ohio, Texas, Mississippi, and Delaware as well as Taiwan. During the many Taiwan visits, we all traveled to Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia.

Richard and Nicole were married in 2007 and Jackson Richard Quinn was born in 2014 in Knoxville. Sadly, Richard passed away from cancer in 2019.
Jerry married Ken Patterson in 2008. They live in San Jose, CA and have no children. Thomas is single. He lives in the Los Angeles area.

Geneology

I was born 12/09/1945. Sadly, my mother died a few days later, so I never knew her. She was Dorothy Dotson Milligan from Trenton TN. I lived with her younger sister, my aunt Louise Milligan, and my grandmother (Miss Jesse) until I was five. My uncle Luther Milligan was in the Navy at that time, so I remember very little about him. He was stationed in Pearl Harbor during the Japanese attack and commended for his actions for evacuating and treating the wounded. My maternal grandfather, Luther Washington Milligan, passed away before I was born.

My grandmother, Jesse Dotson Milligan, was involved with the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) which much more active in the previous century. She was quite proud of documentation about her ancestors in Tennessee and Virginia for six generations.

My father was Richard Sanford Quinn, Sr. born in Dallas, TX. He was in the Army Air Force when I was born. He married Lillian Harvey in 1948. I was not aware of the difference between a mother and a stepmother until I was about 12 years old.

My paternal grandparents were Katheryn Wilkerson and Edwin Yates Quinn. My father had two sisters, June and Katherine, and a brother, William. I am the only male grandson. Katheryn Wilkerson’s father emigrated from England and her mother’s parents emigrated from Germany.

    Additional Information and References

    Dorothy Quinn memory book

My Aunt Louise realized that I knew very little about my mother. She asked one of Dorothy's classmates to help her prepare a scrapbook of photos and memories of her life. These ladies put a lot time, effort and love into this book and gave it to me in 1994. Such a precious gift.

    Grade 6 class project

My sixth grade class project was "publishing" a biography, which included hand-written text, homemade cover, binding, etc. I did know that my step-mother was not my birth mother at that time.
My stepmom had advanced dementia the last few years of her life. She found this book and added revisions to the original text. I admire her intentions.

    Service Record Citation

This is difficult to read, but it is from the Commanding Officer of the USS Solace to Luther, at that time an E-5 Pharmacy Mate.
"For distinguished devotion to duty and extraordinary courage and disregard of your own safety during the Japanese attack on the U. S. Pacific Fleet in Pearl Harbor, Territory of Hawaii on December 7, 1941. While a member of the stretcher party from the U.S.S. Solace, you went aboard the burning U.S.S. Arizona in order to rescue casualties while the crew of that ship were abandoning ship."
